Devices like laptops, smartphones and servers have revolutionized the scenario by allowing instant data transfer.  This innovation saves valuable time and makes communication much more efficient. How does this computer networking work? We will discuss this in the next paragraph.

  • Devices: This includes everything from printers and servers to PCs and smartphones.
  • Mode of TransmissionEthernet cables and 
    Wi-Fi are examples of wired and wireless technologies, through which the devices are connected.
  • Protocols: The data transmission is governed by specific guidelines and rules to determine how the data is transmitted and received across the networks, while also ensuring data privacy. These are the guidelines and customs that make data transmission and reception via a network. Consider them as the languages that devices use to communicate with one another.

  • Local Area Network (LAN): LAN is limited to a confined geographical area. In LAN connectivity, the networks connect computers within a limited area, for example- a school room, building or college campus.
  • Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN): A WLAN transmits the data within a limited area, similar to a LAN. However, unlike LAN it doesn’t require a wired connection for the devices to connect. WLAN is not as secure or robust as LAN or WAN when compared with LAN & WAN, it offers users the flexibility to use their devices in various locations. 
  • Wide Area Network (WAN): Unlike LAN, WAN extends over a large geographical area, and often connects multiple LANs. The biggest example of WAN is the internet, which connects millions of devices.
  • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): It connects multiple LANs within an area of a size of a metropolitan city. 
  • Personal Area Network (PAN): A PAN is a small network limited to two or three devices. For example, if you share a photograph on Bluetooth with anyone else, that is a PAN.
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN): A VPN is an online service that keeps its users safe by encrypting their data and hiding their IP address. It hides their browsing activity, identity and location, offering greater privacy and autonomy.
